Knoxville Region • Long-Term Infrastructure
Knoxville sits at the intersection of I-40, I-75, I-640, and I-275. Regional growth is increasing pressure on corridors that were never designed to carry today's volume. This site collects past studies, current news, and public interest around a long-standing question: should Knoxville have a beltway or bypass?
The Problem
Knoxville's interstate system is one of the most congested in Tennessee. The region's growth compounds a problem that has been studied, discussed, and set aside for decades.
Knox County and surrounding counties have seen consistent population and economic growth, adding more vehicles to a road network built for a smaller city.
I-40, I-75, I-640, and I-275 all converge through the urban core. Regional through-traffic, local commuters, and freight share the same bottlenecked system.
When a crash or closure shuts down a section of I-40 or I-75, there is no meaningful alternate route. Traffic backs up through city streets and secondary roads.
A significant share of interstate traffic passing through Knoxville has no local destination. A beltway would give through-freight and travelers a route that bypasses the urban core entirely.
Proposals for a Knoxville beltway or outer bypass date back to the 1990s. Studies were conducted and then shelved. The problem they were meant to address has not gone away.
Infrastructure at this scale takes decades to plan and build. Restarting the discussion now is not premature — it may already be overdue.

About This Site
This is an independent, informational website. It is not an official government project and is not affiliated with TDOT, Knox County, the City of Knoxville, or the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization.
The goal is to collect past studies, proposals, and news coverage related to the idea of a Knoxville beltway or bypass, and to provide a place where interested residents can find that information in one place.
The beltway concept is presented here as a long-term infrastructure discussion, not as a finalized plan or a political position. The aim is to make the case that this conversation deserves to be restarted — and to gather the public interest that could help make that happen.
